What Kind of Plants Should You Keep Away from Your Dog?

Most people are well aware of the fact that they should not feed their dogs chocolate. And most people know about several other types of food that are less than beneficial to a dog’s health but do you know what plants your dog can and can’t eat? Not a lot of people realise that there are certain types of plants out there that are not good for your dog to eat. In fact, some of these plants can seriously endanger your dog’s health. When your dog is outside sniffing around in the grass, you will want to make sure that you reduce the chances that your dog will sniff, lick, or eat one of these toxic plants.

Do keep in mind that it might be near impossible to prevent all of the toxic plants from growing in your yard. While you might feel discouraged by this, you should simply try to focus on preventing your dog from eating them. If this means tugging on the leash every so often around an area of toxic plants, then this will be best for your dog. At the very least, knowing how these plants look is going to help you out in preventing your dog from eating said plants.

What Are the Plants That You Should Avoid?

Out of all the different things that are toxic to dogs, you should be especially wary of plants. In your yard, they are essentially hiding in plain sight for your dog. In order to keep your dog as healthy as you can, you should have a good idea on what toxic plants for dogs include. Usually, the following plants pose a danger to your dog’s health:

  • Aconitum
  • Amaryllis bulbs
  • Asparagus fern
  • Azalea
  • Cyclamen
  • Daffodil bulbs

  • Laburnum
  • Lily of the valley
  • Lupins

  • Nightshade

  • Rhododendron
  • Rhubarb leaves

Removing the Risk for Your Dog

In order to make sure that your dog’s walk is as safe as possible, you will want to do what you can to remove these plants from your yard. Of course, removing all of the toxic plants is a task easier said than done and it is often nigh impossible to do. However, knowing what plants are dangerous and knowing what your yard has in it is going to play a huge role in ensuring that you can protect your dog.

If you do have some of these plants in your yard, you will want to think about the safest way to get rid of them. If you don’t necessarily want to kill a plant such as sweet peas or rhubarb you might want to consider spraying some citronella around the soil of the plant. The sharp smell of citrus-based oils will deter your pet away from the plant, meaning that it won’t have any interest in eating it. You can also put herbs that your pet doesn’t like around the base of the plant as well.
